Fashion Forward (2020)

Kathi Daghistani focuses on broad themes of culture and identity through a mode of photography that combines editorial aesthetics with conceptual sensibilities. In her recent practice, she celebrates and hopes to empower Middle Eastern women.

Focusing on contemporary modest fashion through a traditional lens, Daghistani combines Western styling and Middle Eastern motifs to merge the two cultures, whilst also deconstructing Western Orientalist stereotypes of the Middle East. By presenting her current work as a fashion supplement along with constructed exhibition prints, she attempts to blur the boundaries between fashion and art. This work invites viewers to reflect on their pre-existing opinions, and hopes to broaden these, while simultaneously inviting Middle Eastern women to be involved and authentically represented.
